Modern PMs are expected to do almost everything.
Understand users.
Define strategy.
Prioritize roadmap.
Coordinate teams.
Analyze funnels.
Run experiments.
Review UX.
Monitor retention.
Think about monetization.
Follow delivery.
And in many companies they are also expected to deeply understand:
• attribution
• analytics consistency
• event taxonomy
• onboarding psychology
• growth loops
• platform limitations
• AI features
At some point the scope simply becomes unrealistic.
The problem is not that PMs became weaker.
Product development became significantly more complex.
That’s why modern companies started creating specialized roles:
• Growth PMs
• Product Analytics
• Experimentation teams
• Lifecycle specialists
• Tracking owners
One thing I repeatedly notice:
If nobody owns analytics implementation quality directly, it degrades by default.
Events drift apart.
Platforms become inconsistent.
Funnels slowly stop reflecting reality.
And eventually teams start making roadmap decisions based on unreliable data.
Modern products became too data-dependent for analytics implementation to be treated as a side task.
